Who is Spot?
We’re a handful of people from the insurance industry and tech community. We’re backed by some of the largest insurance and reinsurance companies in the world. Check out our About page for a slightly less vague answer.
What activities does Spot Cover?
We want to cover the adventurous spirit... your daily life adventures or the once in a lifetime adventures. We cover activities from hang gliding to sailing, military deployment to lawn mower racing. Do you want to jump out of a plane? We got you! Roadtrip across the US? Done! Attempt your first IronMan? Rock On.
Can multiple activities be covered under one policy?
First of all, if you want to do more than one thing at a time that could kill you, ask yourself how good are you at multitasking. Second of all, yes, but we can only cover you for those activities you explicitly selected and are listed to your final policy document.
What if I don't see the activity I want to do listed?
We are constantly adding to our activities and we are sure there are ones we don’t even know about. Email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and let us know.
What if I die on the way to my activity for a random reason not connected to the activity I chose?
We are obligated to pay claims during the time period selected so long as you were truthful to your signed application. Please remember to read your policy for any additional terms.
How long of a policy term can I choose?
Anywhere from one to 30 days. Sorry to disappoint everyone hunting for a 57 hour policy.
How far in advance can I purchase a policy?
A maximum of 30 days prior to the start of your coverage.
Can I purchase Spot activities outside of the US?
We’re hoping to extend beyond the Great White North in the near future, but for now you’re just going to have to take the excuse to eat poutine. Sign up for email notifications or follow us on social to stay up to date on any changes to our coverage or policy options.
Can I purchase multiple policies to have a higher limit than what Spot is offering?
Each customer is allowed exactly one active policy at a time. Thems the rules. That said, multiple activities can be covered under a single policy. See the question “Can multiple activities be covered under one policy?” For the same answer.
Can I purchase a policy on someone else?
Not presently, but we understand the stress and anxiety that can accompany having a risky partner or loved one. A Spot policy is an individual policy, covering just you. Sign up for email updates or follow us on social and we’ll let you know if this changes. Wait, not risky like that.
Am I required to submit any lab work, medical records or see a doctor?
We’ve worked hard to make our process as streamlined as possible. No piles of paperwork. No lengthy approval process. No probing questions from lawyers or probing generally from doctors.*
*Note: We still want you to go to a doctor. A gentle probing can be good for you every once in a while.
How do I know Spot can be trusted?
We’re backed by some of the best insurance and reinsurance companies in the world. They use words like “retrocession” and “facultative.” They’re very good at math. If they let us do this, you better believe our policies are safe, well-researched, and legally binding.
Why should I buy life insurance?
There’s no simple answer to that question, but here are a few of the most common reasons. We’ll spare you the jokes here.
Replacement of Income: If family members depend on your income, life insurance can replace that income or a portion of it and serve as a financial stopgap.
Funeral expenses: Life insurance can help pay your funeral and burial costs as well as any associated costs.
Outstanding debt obligations: Funds from life insurance can assist in paying outstanding debts including credit cards, loans, mortgage and other similar obligations.
Why do you need my SSN?
In short, it’s the simplest way to prove you’re you. Your status as a US Citizen or Legal Resident allows us to verify information and search official records if the event that shall not be named happens. It also helps ensure your beneficiary is paid even if they’re unaware of the extra step you took to care for them.
Why do I need to designate a beneficiary?
A beneficiary is the person who will receive payment from the Spot life insurance policy you purchase. Technically, you don’t need to designate a beneficiary. And, if you don’t, the funds will go to your estate and be subjected to probate state laws which could prevent or delay the funds from going to your financial dependents. So really you should designate a beneficiary you care about to ensure they receive and control the payout of any potential life insurance settlement.
What if I'm not a US Citizen or 10-year Green Card Holder?
Different countries have different rules and regulations regarding insurance, so our policy options for foreign nationals are limited until hire a fancy fleet of lawyers or befriend your ambassador. Sign up for email notifications or follow us on social to stay up to date on any changes to our coverage or policy options.
Is there someone who can help answer a few questions?
Like a licensed broker who’s familiar with us and our policies and who we pay to answer questions? Yeah. Email email@example.com
How do I know that my policy is bound?
Spot’s approval process is instant. Once you sign your policy, make payment and have purchase confirmation, you’re covered for the duration stipulated.
But what does bound mean?
It’s a rare legal word that means what it sounds like it should mean—that we are bound to you to make payment, according to the policy guidelines, should the worst happen...as long as you were honest in your responses.
If I made a mistake or don't want Spot, can I cancel or make a change to my policy?
You can cancel a policy within 24 hours of the date of the policy start because we’re not an airline. Call us at 312-379-2980 to make the changes you need.
How do I know the policy will pay if I die?
Other than our highly visible, highly solvent backers as well as legal and moral obligations? You don’t.
What happens if the unthinkable happens?
First, we hope you and your loved ones never have to file a claim. Second, make sure you’ve designated a beneficiary and made them aware of your policy. Third, make sure your beneficiary knows how to file a claim with us, since, you know, you won’t be doing that for them. Provide your loved ones our phone number and we promise to take care of them, 312-379-2930.
Why would I buy Spot if I already have life insurance?
Typical life insurance can be full of exclusions and doesn't encourage you to jump out of an airplane, or dive with sharks, for example. We do. If you're not certain you're covered with your current life insurance, Spot can be your...uh...insurance. Or maybe you need to add a little more to cover the credit card used to pay for what's about to kill you.
How is Spot different than travel insurance?
Most travel insurance packages cover what is related to, well, travel. For example, trip cancellation, trip interruption, trip delay, lost or delayed baggage, medical coverage, medical evacuation etc.. But not life. Spot is the ultimate back up insurance to care for those that may not be going where you are.
